Description
Horsetail Equisetum arvense L.
Family:Equisetaceae.
Other Names: Horsetail; field horsetail; prêle de champs (French); Ackerschachtelhalm (German); coda di cavallo, equiseto dei campi (Italian).
Description: The horsetail family was already present in the Carboniferous age and is a relict of the early evolution of land plants. Horsetail produces unbranched fertile stems in the early spring, with brownish spore-bearing cones at the tips. In summer, several sterile stems of up to 0.5 m emerge, each having numerous nodes with four or five side branches around each node. The leaves are reduced to minute bracts arranged in a circle at each node. Also used are E. hyemale and E. fluviatile. The drug is sometimes adulterated with marsh horsetail (E. palustre). The latter is distinguished from other species by the length of the first internode of the lateral branches, which is shorter than the leaf sheath around the main stem where it is attached.
Origin: Northern temperate zone (North America, Europe and Asia). The sterile summer branches are wild-harvested in eastern Europe.
Parts Used: Dried stems (Equiseti herba).
Therapeutic Category: Diuretic, traditional haemostyptic.
Uses and Properties: The herb is used mainly as a diuretic to treat inflammation of the lower urinary tract, kidney gravel and post-traumatic and static oedema. Traditionally, it is used externally for slow healing wounds and other skin disorders; internally in case of enhanced menstrual bleeding.
Active Ingredients: The herb contains 5-8% silicic acid (including water-soluble silicates), and 1.5% potassium and aluminum salts. Several flavonoids (glycosides and esters of quercetin and kaempferol equisetolic acid (a dicarboxylic acid) and traces of alkaloids (nicotine, palustrine) are present. E. palustre contains the enzyme thiaminase that breaks down thiamine (= vitamin B1) and causes (sometimes fatal) poisoning of horses and other livestock. It also contains potentially toxic spermidine alkaloids such as palustrine.
Pharmacological Effects: The uses of Equisetum are mainly based on tradition. Flavonoids, silica and potassium salts could be responsible for the weak diuretic activity, wound-healing and the repair of bone and skin tissue.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+.
Preparation and Dosage: For internal use, a tea is made of 2 - 4 g of the dried herb (daily dose about 6 g) and for external use, 10 g per litre of water.
