Population-based studies show a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer in cultures of high green tea consumption. Polyphenols in green tea have been studied in vitro and results confirm their aility to inhibit breast, lung, and esophageal cancer cells. Many population-based studies have identified a pattern of green tea consumption and reduced risk of almost all types of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and liver diseases such as hepatitis. Green tea is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to lower total cholesterol and raise desirable HDL levels. Regular consumption may reduce inflammation asociated with certain bowel disorders like IBD and Crohn's disease.
Although the bulk of the research has relied upon animal, laboratory, or population-based conclusions, there have been some important human trials. A 2006 Japanese study concluded that healthy adult participants "who consumed 5 or more cups of tea per day had a 16 percent lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 26 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease than participants who consumed less than one cup of tea per day". In a study based out of the Phillipines, green tea extract cream was found to be superior to benzoyl peroxide cream in the treatment of acne. A trial based out of Nashville, Tennessee demonstrated how green tea extract was able to lower LDL cholesterol levels significantly more than the placebo in 240 adults over a 12-week span.
In 2006, Yale university researchers examined over 100 studies examining the health benefits of green tea and coined the term "Asian paradox" to describe the low rates of cancer and heart disease despite high rates of smoking in Asian countries. The high levels of polyphenols and antioxidants are believed to be responsible for the incredible protective benfits of the tea.
