Description: Mugwort is an erect perennial herb of up to 1 m in height. The leaves are pinnately dissected, with a feathery appearance - they are dark green above and markedly silvery below. Inconspicuous yellowish or reddish-brown flower heads are borne in terminal clusters.
Origin: Widely distributed in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia, (introduced to North America) where it is a weed of disturbed places.
Parts Used: Dried leaves or aboveground parts (Artemisiae herba), sometimes also the roots.
Uses and Properties: Since ancient times, mugwort has been used for numerous medicinal and magical purposes (e.g. as anthelmintic to expel threadworm and roundworm). The main modem use is as an aromatic bitter to treat dyspepsia and lack of appetite. It is traditionally considered to be a useful medicine for the treatment of neuroses, depression, restlessness, insomnia, anxiety and irregular or painful menstruation.
Active Ingredients: The plant contains a very variable volatile oil (up to 0.3%) with 1,8-cineole, camphor, linalool, thujone and numerous other monoterpenenes and sesquiterpenes (depending on the source). Also present are sesquiterpene lactones (including vulgarin and psiostachyin), flavonol glycosides and coumarins.
Pharmacological Effects: The uses and effects correspond to those of wormwood (A. absinthium) but the therapeutic value has not yet been substantiated by modem studies.
Notes: Tarragon or estragon (A. dracunculus) is used as a culinary herb - to flavour vinegar - but it is also considered to have appetite-stimulant and mild sedative properties. The wormwood mentioned in the Bible is A. herba-alba. In addition to the species treated here, several others are used in traditional medicine: Levant wormseed (A. cina) used mainly as a vermifuge in classical times, Japanese wormwood or yin chen hao (A. capillaris), used for centuries in China to treat liver and intestinal disorders, and A. scoparia.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
Preparation and Dosage: Hot water extracts of 0.5 - 2 g of the dried herb are taken two or three times per day. It is an ingredient of herbal teas and diet tablets.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
