Description

The milk thistle makes a dramatic spiky plant for the border or gravel garden with a tracery of white veins, followed by purple thistle flowers. The plant originates from the mountains and stony thickets of Africa, the Mediterranean, and central Europe. It has naturalized in North America on dry stony soil.

History

The name comes from the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides who called all thistle plants silybon. Marianum was added later from the legend that the Virgin Mary's milk ran down the leaves causing their white variegation. By association it was used to encourage the flow of milk for nursing mothers.

Characteristics

A completely hardy annual or biennial with prickly, pinnately lobed, white-veined and marbled spiny leaves. The thistle-like flowerheads appear in midsummer and are followed by black seeds. Height up to 4 feet, spread 24 inches.

Growing Tips

Sow seed in a sunny well-drained place and thin to 2 feet apart. They do not like having wet feet. To retain the foliage effect for longer, cut off the flowering stems.

How to Use

Medicinally, the seeds can help liver function. Milk thistle not only protects liver function, it can actually enhance and stimulate new liver cells to form. This action is of great interest in the treatment of liver cirrhosis and hepatitis, both potentially fatal conditions.
