Description
Mallow, Marsh Althaea officinalis (Mallards, Cheeses; Common Mallow: Malva sylvestris)
Medicinal usage
The common and marsh mallow were used medicinally for many of the same ailments. Pliny said that one of the marvels of all mallows was that "whoever swallows half a cyathus [wine-ladle] of the juice a day shall be immune to all diseases." In England fresh mallow leaves were used as a poultice for wounds, bruises, sprains, inflammations, stings and insect bites. They were also used to treat coughs, chest and lung complaints, diarrhoea, insomnia, cystitis and gastric ulcers.
Culinary Usage
Mallow leaves were eaten as a vegetable, and added to salads, soups and stews. The unripe seed capsules, known as 'cheeses', were eaten raw with salads. The modern sugary confectionery known as marshmallow, which contains no herbal extracts, originated from a soothing sweet recipe made from the powdered root of Althaea officinalis.
Miscellaneous
Native to Britain and Europe, the mallow was known to the Greeks, Romans, and Anglo-Saxons, and was listed by Aelfric. The botanical name Althaea comes from the Greek for to cure, while the common name mallow is derived from the Greek for to soften, referring to its softening and soothing properties. From ancient times mallows were eaten to reduce sexual desire, especially as a countermeasure against aphrodisiacs and love-potions. They were also used in cosmetics.
