Description
Marjoram, Common Origanum vulgare (Wild Marjoram or Oregano; Knotted Marjoram: Origanum marjorana)
Medicinal Usage
Valued as something of a cure-all, marjoram was prescribed for indigestion, insomnia, earache, loss of appetite, dropsy and many other ailments. The leaves and flowers were made into an aromatic tea to stimulate digestion, relieve flatulence, soothe nervei, cure colds and headaches, and promote menstruation. Dried and powdered, the leaves were used as a snuff to clear nasal congestion. Externally, marjoram was used to relieve pain, stings, bruises and rheumatic swellings. Gerard recommended the leaves boiled in water for "such as are given to overmuch sighing."
Culinary Usage
A sweet and savoury pot-herb with a wide range of flavouring uses, marjoram was added to salads, soups, sauces, stuffings, stews and meat dishes. It was also used to flavour beer and other alcoholic drinks.
Miscellaneous
A native of Mediterranean regions, oregano was introduced into Britain by the Romans, who, like the Greeks, considered it to signify peace and happiness. As well as being worn by bridal couples, the herb was used to scent winding sheets, and was planted on graves to ensure that the dead rested in blessed peace. Its botanical name Origanum is derived from the Greek for 'joy of the mountain'. Medieval monks grew oregano in their gardens not only for its usefulness, but for its fragrance and decoration. Sweet marjoram was introduced into England during the Middle Ages. Valued as a preserving and disinfecting herb, marjoram was strewn on floors, and included in pot-pourri, cosmetics and perfumes. The scented leaves were used to polish furniture. The plant yields a reddish-purple dye, and is particularly favoured by bees.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
