Description
Sweet or knotted marjoram is highly perfumed and has thick trusses of dainty, white, pale mauve, or purple flowers, which make it one of the most decorative plants in the herb garden. It also represents good value since the leaves dry or freeze well for culinary use, and the flowers maybe dried for long-lasting arrangements or potpourri.
History
Sweet marjoram has been cultivated since ancient times. It is a native of central Europe, where it was grown for its many medicinal uses.
Characteristics
The plant grows to about 10 inches high, with a spread of 8 inches. The stems are tough, woody, and inclined to be straggly, while the dark gray-green leaves are oval and up to ¾ inch long. The flowers are minute but plentiful, and are borne in clusters around the stem. They are produced from green pea-like buds known as "knots," which give the plant its alternative name.
Growing Tips
The plant prefers a moist, fertile soil in a sunny position that is sheltered from wind. Sow seed in late spring when there is no risk of frost. To aid germination, which in cold soil can take a month, it is a good idea to warm the soil first by protecting it with cloches.
How to Use
Add fresh leaves to casseroles just before serving to retain the full flavor. They can also be used in sauces, stuffings, sparingly in salads, in egg and cheese dishes, and in fruit salads.
Sleep is one of the greatest aids to good looks and a herb pillow well stuffed with marjoram will ensure a good night's rest. An infusion of the leaves and flowers or a few drops of essential oil added to rosewater is a delightful skin toner. The exceptionally aromatic essential oil can also be used in bath and massage oils to combat tiredness.
A few drops massaged into the scalp gives dry hair a gloss and prevents hair loss.
