Description
Licorice root (or gan t'sao in Chinese) has a neutral, pleasant taste and, pharmacologically, it is classified as an expectorant, an alterative, a demulcent, and a laxative. It provides general effects for the whole body, but primarily addresses the systems of the body that include the lungs, stomach, intestines, spleen, and liver.
Licorice contains substances similar to the adrenal cortical hormones. For this reason, it is very beneficial in treating adrenal insufficiency and other glandular problems. However, large and frequent doses will exacerbate hypertension.
Licorice can safely be added to tonics and detoxifying herbal formulas to alleviate the harsh stimulating aspects of bitter herbs without interfering with the beneficial aspects associated with their use. It is considered one of the most important herbs of Chinese medicine and is frequently prescribed as part of Chinese herbal formulas.
It is a proven remedy for all kinds of stomach and intestinal ulcers. It also has a stimulating action and helps counteract stress.
By itself, licorice is a good remedy for flu, colds, debility and all lung problems. It is a very good expectorant for treating coughs and bronchial congestion. For colds and flu, combine licorice with stimulating herbs, such as black pepper, sage, juniper, cayenne or ginger. Licorice root can be smoked for relief of sore throat and hoarseness.
Licorice is beneficial to the liver and for this it is often mixed with equal parts of peony root. It is a safe sweetener for diabetics. It is a good mild laxative that can be given to children and persons who are debilitated.
As a detoxifier of the blood, it can be combined favorably with echinacea, dandelion, red clover, burdock, sassafras or sarsaparilla.
Herbal pills can be made by decocting licorice with other herbs, straining and then slowly simmering down the liquid until a thick paste is formed. It is then rolled into little pills and dried at low heat or in the sun.
Licorice should not be given to people who tend to retain water in their bodily tissues.
