Description
Licorice is a tall and graceful plant with green leaflets and pale blue or violet pea-type flowers. An important medicinal herb in ancient times and still used in many medical preparations, it is equally valuable for confectionery and flavoring. Native to the Mediterranean, it is grown commercially throughout the temperate zones.
History
Licorice was mentioned on Assyrian tablets. Some was found in the funeral chamber of Tutankhamun. Roman legionnaires chewed it, as did Napoleon, we are told, to calm his nerves on the battlefield. It reached Europe in the fifteenth century. The Dominican friars at Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire, England made it popular with their famous Pontefract cakes and the licorice lozenges known as pomfrets. The name comes from the Greek glycys or 'sweet' and rhiza, 'root'.
Characteristics
Licorice is a hardy perennial with stoloniferous roots, downy stems, and pinnate leaves, with nine to 17 leaflets. Pale blue to violet pea-flowers on loose spikes are followed by oblong pods up to 14 inches long. Height 4 feet. Spread 36 inches.
Growing Tips
Licorice likes a deep rich sandy soil in a sheltered sunny spot. Plant pieces of root, each with a bud or two, about 36 inches apart when the plant is dormant. Seed sown in autumn or spring is an alternative though this method can be slow. Once established, licorice can be difficult to eradicate.
How to Use
Medicinally, the root can help Addison's disease, asthma, and has a powerful detoxifying action on the liver. However, the sodium content of this herb makes it unsuitable for pregnant women or those with high blood pressure.
An estrogen-like action has been noted that makes it a good remedy for menopausal problems.
Taken for stomach problems, licorice has a great healing power on the lining of the stomach. The cells are stimulated to multiply and ulcers can be cured within 1 to 2 months of regular use.
