Description
Nearly everyone knows the sweet taste of licorice (even if the flavor in candies usually comes from another herb, anise). True licorice is used in cough medicines, with the medicinal value coming from the sweet-tasting root. Native to Europe, with spiky, blue flowers, licorice is a member of the pea family, and is a perennial herb.
Potential Health Benefits
The midnight-black extract of the root is effective for curing inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, according to the commission, which also concludes that the glycyrrhizic acid in licorice helps to heal gastric and duodenal ulcers. However, licorice juice, also used medicinally, wasn't endorsed by Commission E.
Scientific Evidence
The glycyrrhizic acid in licorice root helps to heal ulcers and loosens mucous, which enhances licorice's value in treating bronchitis and coughs.
According to a 1992 study published in Microbiology and Immunology, licorice stimulates the production of interferon, which in turn fights viruses.
In studies published in the Lancet, the British Medical Journal, and the Journal of the American Medical Association, licorice has performed well in tests measuring its effectiveness against the herpes simplex virus.
Licorice and its various constituents, including glycyrrhizin, have been found to be prophylactic against cancer.
How to Use the Herb
Licorice is taken internally. Commission E's recommendations: average daily doses of 5-15 grams of powdered root, equivalent to 200-600 milligrams of glycrrhizin. With liquid extracts, 0.5-1.0 gram for inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and 1.5-3.0 grams per day for gastric/duodenal ulcers.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Licorice is useful but tricky. It shouldn't be used medically by persons with liver disorders or severe kidney insufficiency or by pregnant or nursing women. Avoid licorice if you have a history of heart problems or stroke; it can cause potassium loss and water retention, elevating blood pressure. Don't use for more than four to six weeks without medical supervision. According to American nutritionist Ed Blonz, licorice root poses "potential interactions with digitalis drugs, thiazide or loop diuretics: corticosteroids, and aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs."
