As a hot, dry herb, the root of ginger was prescribed to warm the stomach, promote perspiration, treat colds, flu and lung infections, and improve blood circulation to peripheral parts of the body suffering from cold. It was also used to stimulate digestion, improve liver function, relax muscle spasms, and ease flatulence, colic and nausea. As a massage oil, ginger was used to stimulate circulation, and to relieve muscular and rheumatic aches and pains. Modern research has found that eating ginger is effective in reducing travel, or motion sickness.
Culinary Usage
The aromatic roots of ginger were used fresh, dried, pickled, and preserved in syrup; while the stems were crystallized. Dried and ground into powder, the rhizomes were added as a spice to cakes, confectionery, gingerbread and ginger beer. 'Green ginger' refers to the root before it is dried.
Miscellaneous
A native of tropical Asia, ginger, or zingiber, was widely used by the Greeks, as well as by the Romans who brought it to Britain. Although grown in gardens in medievel England, Gerard remarked that it "is most impatient of the coldness of these our northern regions", and "as soon as it hath been touched with the first sharp blast of winter, it hath perished both blade and root." Ginger was also used in perfumes.
Ginger seems to be an extremely safe herb, and one that can successfully prevent motion sickness and relieve the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. Still, any pregnant woman contemplating its use should check with her physician first. Because ginger grows commercially in so many places, and because the content of the rhizomes varies depending on where the plant is grown, and because their is no industry or government standard for gingerol and shaogol content, results may vary from batch to batch, and from manufacturer to manufacturer.
