Description
The Traveler's Companion
Like many herbs the medicinal use of ginger can be traced back to ancient China. Documented evidence dating back to 400 BC describes ginger being used to treat stomach, diarrhoea, nausea, rheumatism and toothache. Today, it is the herb of choice for travel and morning sickness.
The use of ginger in the treatment of morning sickness associated with pregnancy has become popular over recent years. A scientific study demonstrated that a 250 mg dose taken four times daily significantly reduced vomiting and nausea experienced by 19 out of 27 pregnant women studied. Because of the herb's exceptional safety record and extremely low level of toxicity it has entered conventional medicine's list of recommendations for morning sickness.
Health Benefits
Reduces Nausea: For many years ginger has been recommended for motion sickness. NASA and the US Navy have both studied this herb with mixed results and reviews. The naval study found it helped its cadets find their "sea legs" quicker. It was noted, however, that one of the most important aspects of ginger related to the quality and purity of ginger powder used.
From the various studies it would appear that ginger acts on the stomach and gut rather than the nervous system. This may partly explain its positive effects on certain types of motion sickness and the variability relating to the type and dose of ginger preparation used.
Beating the Heat: Ginger has recently become a popular herb for the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. It is now well established that chemicals belonging to the eicosanoid group cause the pain and inflammation of arthritis. These substances are active hormone-like compounds produced from dietary fat. They are eventually broken down in the body to even more potent inflammatory chemicals. Many of the commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs block these chemicals and ease pain but their side effects, such as stomach irritation and ulceration, often limit their usefulness when it comes to long-term use. Ginger, on the other hand, has no adverse effects on the stomach and can effectively reduce the inflammatory effects of these compounds.
