Flax Seeds for Kidney Health
There are numerous studies involving animals and a significant number of human clinical trials to support the use of flax for kidney-related disorders. A Canadian study out of the University of Western Ontario confirmed kidney-protective properties of flax in relation to lupus nephritis. Lignans extracted from flax seeds have been used successfully to delay the onset of proteinuria and improve filtration rate in mice as reported in the journal Lupus. In Manitoba, flax-fed animals showed "lower serum creatinine levels, less cystic change, less renal fibrosis, and less macrophage infiltration of kidney tissues than controls." This was in an experiment to determine if the ususal course of renal pathology would be altered in experimentally-induced polycystic kidney disease. Flax seed also offers kidney-protective benefits for humans - not just animals. In a 2001 study, a randomized crossover trial concluded that flax supplementation led to lower serum creatine and lower microalbumin levels in forty lupus nephritis patients. Flax seeds have been studied for their anti-inflammatory, antioxodative, and antisclerotic properties. Soy protein also seems to moderate protein levels and improve kidey function. It remains unclear exactly what biochemical constituents are responsible for these positive benefits, although the omega-3 essential fatty acids are the focus of many of the trials.
