Description
With its bright lime green or yellow-green leaves that retain their color through the winter, feverfew is a year-round decorative garden plant. It is low growing, bushy, and vigorous, quickly thickening up, spreading and self-seeding. The pretty white flowers, which may be like single or double daisies, dry well for flower arranging.
History
Its medicinal uses are well chronicled by Gerard who, in his Herball, said that the dried plant was useful for those "that are giddie in the head ... melancholike and pensive," and by Culpeper, who recommended it for "all pains of the head coming of a cold cause."
Characteristics
Various forms of the plant may grow to a height of anywhere from 9 inches to 24 inches. The deeply cut leaves are brightly colored, and have a sharp, unpleasantly bitter taste. The flowers, which are produced through the summer and into mid-fall, are thick and daisy-like, with yellow centers.
Growing Tips
The plant will thrive in the poorest of soils, even in paving cracks and walls. Ideally, it likes a well-drained soil and a sunny position. You can easily grow it from seed or by root division.
How to Use
The plant's bitter taste rules out culinary uses, but is worth tolerating for its medicinal and cosmetic properties.
Feverfew was one of the ingredients of the famous Gervase Markham's seventeenth-century skin tonic, which was reputed to purify and repair unsightly complexions. A lotion made with a handful of leaves and flowers simmered for 20 minutes in ½ pint of milk, cooled and strained, will nourish dry skin, remove pimples and blemishes, reduce soreness, and lighten freckles. Alternatively stand the herb in buttermilk for a week, strain and apply to the face, until dry.
Medicinally, feverfew contains many chemicals, one of which (parthenolide) has the ability to reduce inflammatory substances, associated with migraine headaches, being released from blood cells. Feverfew has also been used in other types of headache remedy as well as in the treatment of minor fevers, rheumatism, and arthritis.
