Description
Fenugreek (from the Latin for "Greek hay") is native to Mediterranean countries and is a popular additive in horse rations. It's good for people, too. Fenugreek flavors Indian curries and has a range of modern and traditional medical uses, several of which were validated by Commission E.
Potential Health Benefits
Fenugreek, taken internally, is used to stimulate the appetite. Applied externally, it's used in poultices for local inflammation. Some writers credit fenugreek with increasing milk production for nursing mothers, as well as elevating the sex drive in women - points not addressed by Commission E.
Scientific Evidence
The ripe, dried seed contains bitter principles and mucilage that, when mixed with water, produces a paste useful in poultices. Commission E also found that fenugreek is secretolytic: that is, it breaks down secretions in the lungs, and is a mild antiseptic, as well.
The PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines & Healing Therapies reports that "Researchers have been unable to pinpoint the active ingredient in the herb." Health writer Steven B. Karch, M.D., writes that an amino acid in fenugreek, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, "increases glucose-induced insulin from the pancreas."
While Commission E didn't address fenugreek's use as a treatment for diabetes, Karch comments: "Claims about treating diabetes [with fenugreek] appear to have a basis in fact." In a 1996 study published in Phytotherapy Research, scientists found that fenugreek seed triggered a 14 percent reduction in serum cholesterol levels in 60 non-insulin-dependent diabetics in a 24-week trial.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Fenugreek has no known drug interactions, but it can produce skin irritation from repeated external use. Commission E reports no other major side effects. Some authors caution pregnant women to limit their use of fenugreek or avoid it in medicinal doses entirely. Please check with your obstetrician before using it.
