Description
Clove Tree Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry (= Eugenia caryophyllus (C. Spreng.) Bull. & Hart.).
Family: Myrtaceae.
Other Names: Giroflier (French); Gewürznelkenbaum (German); chiodi di garofano (Italian); clavero (Spanish).
Description: The clove tree is an evergreen tropical plant that may reach 12 m, bearing simple, glossy green leaves and small white flowers with numerous prominent stamens. Another species of Syzygium that is well known for its medicinal properties is the jambolan, S. cumini.
Origin: Southeast Asia (Moluccas Islands); traditionally cultivated in Tanzania (Zanzibar), Madagascar and other East African islands, but is nowadays found as a crop in almost all tropical parts of the world. The jambolan originates from southern Asia; grown as a crop in many tropical regions.
Parts Used: Hand-picked and dried flower buds, known as cloves (Caryophylli flos) or the essential oil distilled from them (clove oil; Caryophylli aetheroleum). In the case of jambolan, the bark or seeds are used.
Therapeutic Category: Local anaesthetic, carminative.
Uses and Properties: Cloves or clove oil are used as a first aid remedy for toothache and to treat mucosal inflammations of mouth and throat; in traditional medicine internally as carminative and anti-emetic, externally against rheumatism and myalgia. It is often included in stomachic medicines and tonics. The oil can be used as an insect repellent. Cloves are famous as a spice. In Indonesia, they form an important component of the local cigarettes. Jambolan bark is used against diarrhoea and topically against inflammation of the mouth, throat and skin.
Preparation and Dosage: Clove oil is used in its pure form for topical application against toothache. For mouthwashes, extracts or dilutions corresponding to 5% essential oil may be used. The daily dose of jambolan bark is 3 - 6 g.
Active Ingredients: The essential oil occurs in large quantities in the buds (15 - 20% of dry weight), with eugenol as the main component (up to 85%) and smaller amounts of eugenyl acetate (up to 15%) and beta-caryophyllene (up to 7%). Cloves also contain flavonoids, galloyltannins, phenolic acids and triterpenes.
Pharmacological Effects: Clove oil has known local anaesthetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic and carminative activity. Eugenol inhibits prostaglandin formation, explaining its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Warning: The oil can cause allergies.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+. (cloves, jambolan bark); WHO 2.
