General Herb Information
Chamomile - Both German (Matricaria Chamomilla) and Roman (now called English) (Anthemis nobilis) chamomiles have the same characteristic thready, lacy leaves, small daisylike blossoms, and similar properties but different habits of growth; Roman (English) chamomile is called ground apple; German chamomile is the wild or bitter.
Propagation: Roman - Seed, easy germination; by root division; by layering of runners; German - Seed, easy germination; self-sows freely; fragrant plant.
Nature of Plant:
Roman variety is excellent for ground cover and paths, if mowed and rolled; German variety rises to 15 inches; its self-sowing propensities make it poor for the garden but prolific in production of flower heads.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 6 inches.
Cultural Requirements: Dry, light, sandy soil in full sun.
Uses
Flower Head: (Medicinal) In infusions for sedative and for feverish colds, anthelmintic, tincture mixed with water and applied to exposed parts of the body will keep off insects; (Household) as a rinse to keep golden tints of the hair;
Roman: (Industrial) Oil used in perfume, shampoo powder, hair rinse, flavoring for tobacco;
German: (Industrial) Oil is solvent for platinum chloride and because of that property is used in process of coating glass and porcelain with platinum; in perfumery process for blending compounds; combined with oils of patchouli, lavender and oak moss in perfumes.
