Blessed Thistle Centaurea bendicta (L.) L. (= Cnicus benedictus L.)
Family: Asteraceae.
Other Names: Holy thistle; benediktenkraut (German); chard on bénit (French); cards santo (Italian); cardo santo (Spanish).
Description: Holy thistle is an erect annual herb (up to 0.7 m), with lobed hairy leaves and characteristic yellow flower heads surrounded by spine-tipped bracts.
Origin: Mediterranean region; introduced in most parts of Europe, Asia, South Africa and Central and South America. Commercial product comes from eastern and southern Europe.
Uses and Properties: Used mainly as a bitter tonic and stomachic to treat dyspepsia and loss of appetite. It is a component of various herbal teas, including cholagogues and remedies for gastrointestinal ailments, The herb has been taken to treat internal cancers, diabetes, gout and rheumatism and applied topically for wounds and ulcers.
Active Ingredients: The plant contains volatile oil (p-cymene, citronellol, cuminal; also cinnamaldehyde, henzaldehyde) but the biological activity is ascribed mainly to the bitter substances - sesquiterpene lactones of the germacrane type. The main constituent is cnicin, with smaller quantities of artemisilfolin and solonitenolide. The bitterness is partly due to trachelogenin and arctigenin, lignan lactones. Also present are polyacetylenes, triterpenes and flavonoids.
Pharmacological Effects: Bitter terpenoid lactones with an α-methylen-γ-lactone structure can form covalent bonds with proteins and are known to have antiphlogistic and antibacterial activities. Crilcin shows cytotoxicity in cell cultures and some antitumour activity in mice. As an aromatic bitter, the herb stimulates the secretion of gastric juice and saliva, and thus increases appetite.
Notes: Extracts are traditionally used in Europe in herbal liqueurs. Another traditional European stomachic is the stemless carlina, Carlina acaulis. It is wild-harvested in eastern Europe (collection has been prohibited in Germany). Roots are considered to have diaphoretic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The essential oil contains up to 80% carlina oxide and other polyacetylenes with strong antibacterial activity.
