Description

Siberian ginseng root is a member of the ginseng family, though it is of a different genus than other popular ginsengs such as the Panax variety. Herbalists call it an adaptogen. Its name comes from the Chinese jen shen, which means "man root," so-named because some roots have limb-like branches resembling arms and legs. Because the root has a human-like shape, it is considered by Orientals to be an overall body tonic.

The root is not harvested until it is two or more years old; the older the root, the higher its value. It is held in high esteem in China, where it has been valued for thousands of years, sometimes commanding a higher price than gold. Siberian ginseng is found in the Siberian province of Russia. Many adulterated forms of ginseng exist on the market.

Both the glandular system and the immune system benfit from regular use of Siberian ginseng root. This herb is commonly used in the treatment of circulation problems, low energy, fatigue, stress, anxiety, nervousness, sleeplessness/insomnia, poor digestion, and diarrhea.

Panax Ginseng is also known by the names Korean Ginseng, Asian Ginseng, Asiatic Ginger, and Chinese Ginseng. Panax Ginseng is a deciduous perennial shrub whose fleshy root requires 4-6 years of cultivation to reach maturity. Its name comes from the Chinese "jen shen," which means "man root," so-named because some roots have limb-like branches resembling arms and legs. Because the root has a human-like shape, it is considered by Orientals to be an overall body tonic.

Traditionally, the wild root was consumed to vitalize, strengthen, and rejuvenate the entire body. Widely cultivated, Panax Ginseng is now used as a natural preventive, restorative remedy and valued for its adaptogenic properties.

Used for centuries in China, Panax Ginseng was believed to be an anti-aging herb. Today, Ginseng is a favorable herb because of its ability to be used long-term without toxic effects on the body. Panax Ginseng contains adaptogens that have been known to return the body's system levels back to normal. By equalizing the system levels in the body, Panax Ginseng has been used to lower cholesterol, balance the metabolism, increase energy levels, and stimulate the immune system. It has also been used to alleviate fatigue and reduce nervousness and stress on the body. Panax Ginseng also increases oxygenation to the cells and tissues, promoting detoxification, and stimulating the regeneration of damaged cells. For this reason, Panax Ginseng is the popular choice because it enhances the feeling of overall well being by stimulating the nervous system, brain, and heart, as well as healthy liver functions.

Licorice Root is used for bronchitis, digestive tract spasms, coughs, stomach inflammation, and as a tonic for the adrenals.

Both Licorice Root and Licorice Juice are used medicinally. Licorice speeds healing of stomach ulcers. The juice is also used for viral liver inflammations, and, in Asian medicine, the root is used for boils, diarrhea, headache, excessive thirst, sore throat, and swellings from infections. Their effectiveness for these disorders has not, however, been scientifically verified.

Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which helps heal stomach ulcers and soothes inflammation. It also loosens and thins mucus in the lungs and acts as a decongestant. There is some evidence that Licorice may help the body fight viruses by encouraging the production of interferon.

There are several varieties of Licorice growing from southeastern Europe to southwestern Asia and Iraq. The plant was introduced to the Ancient Greeks by Scythians from the east. It has been used in Europe since the Middle Ages.
