Description
Kidney bean pod is a diuretic used for kidney and bladder problems. Kidney bean pod is also used for edema, dropsy, sciatica, and rheumatism and to lower sugar in the blood. A longer use of the pods may clear up acne.
Kidney bean pod tea according to a naturopath, Dr. Chinyere Ogbonna, is useful for dropsy, sciatica, chronic rheumatism, kidney and bladder problems, uric acid accumulations, and loss of albumin in the urine during pregnancy. She said, "When applied externally, extracts of kidney bean promotes healing of ulcers and sores." Prolonged use of the decoction made from the beans is recommended for difficult cases of acne.
Properties and indications on kidney bean according to Encyclopedia on Medical Plants by Dr. George D. Pamplona-Roger shows that the pods contain several amino acids, especially arginine, as well as vitamins A, B, and C, mineral salts, trace elements, bran, and starch. The report shows that kidney bean pods present three basic properties:
Diuretic (encourages the passing of urine) due to the mineral salts and arginine. They lack the undesirable effects of some chemical diuretic substances such as loss of potassium. This property is useful for edema produced by coronary or renal insufficiency, and for pre-menstrual retention of liquid. They are also used for gout and kidney stones, since they promote the elimination of uric acid.
Cardiotonic (improves the functioning of the heart). This property of kidney bean pods is similar to that of foxglove, though much milder. They increase the strength of heart contractions and its general performance.
Hypoglycemic (reduction of blood sugar). A decoction of kidney bean pods is used to decrease the blood sugar level.
Java Tea has a mild diuretic action, useful for flushing the kidneys and urinary tract. It also relieves spasms of the smooth muscle in the walls of the internal organs, making it valuable for gallbladder problems. Researchers have found it to be mildly antiseptic as well. Java Tea is recommended for:
Kidney and bladder stones
Liver and gallbladder problems
Urinary tract infections
Java Tea is also taken for rheumatism and gout, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been verified. While it's not exactly clear how java tea works, it has been customarily thought that some or all of the active compounds within java tea help to open the ureters - the tubes leading from the kidneys to the bladder - allowing small stones to be passed. It is for this reason that java tea is recommended for improved urinary flow and irrigation of the urinary tract. In vitro and animal studies demonstrate the diuretic, antihypertensive, and hypoglycemic effects of java tea.
Horsetail is used for kidney and bladder stones, urinary tract infections, wounds and burns. Horsetail gains its name from the bristly appearance of its jointed stems. Its ability to draw excess water from the body makes it useful for flushing bacterial infections and kidney stones from the urinary tract. Horsetail also alleviates painful urination, reduces inflammation of the prostate gland, and helps eliminate some cases of adolescent bed wetting. Out of all known herbs, Horsetail contains the highest amount of silica, which is an important nutrient for healthy hair, skin, nails, and connective tissues throughout the body.
Corn Silk is helpful for any irritation of the urinary system. Corn Silk is used for renal problems in children, and also as a urinary demulcent combined with other herbs in the treatment of cystitis, urethritis, and prostatitis. Corn Silk was used traditionally as a mild diuretic. Chinese research indicates that Corn Silk reduces hypertension and reduces blood clotting time. Corn Silk has been used in conditions of high uric acid such as gout and some types of arthritis. It helps to reduce conditions of painful swelling, and is used for a wide range of genito-urinary complaints. Even though it is a diuretic, Corn Silk can also benefit frequent urination conditions by soothing bladder irritation. Corn Silk has been used to soothe irritation, to the kidneys and bladder, often caused by burning and painful urination. Corn Silk alleviates the irritation of the bladder and urinary tract by coating the membranes lining the urinary system walls. Corn Silk may also alleviate prostate disorders including difficulty in the beginning of urination. Corn Silk has also been known to reduce the formation of sediments in the kidneys, relieve inflammation caused by urinary tract problems and help reduce water retention in the body.

I take vicodin and relafin for rheumatoid arthritis--for pain. I have taken them for 2 years. I took vioxx before that for 5 years. I am a 59 year old woman. I don't like taking dugs, but I haven't found anything that is natural that works against pain. Would this kidney complex help protect my kidneys? I have no kidney problems. THANK YOU for your help! Judy

A qualified healthcare provider, like a naturopath, would be an excellent person to consult for recommending dietary supplements in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Many people have had great success making some dietary modifications, replenishing specific minerals, and adding some key supplements. RA sufferers all over the world have discovered that taking drugs for the rest of their lives is not the only option.
As you already know, I'm sure, DMARDs, NSAIDs, and other steroids, inhibitors, and suppressants attack the symptomology of the disease, but often at the expense of the GI tract or vital organs like the liver and kidneys. That's not to say that these medications do not have their place in the treatment of RA, but often times patients will show signs of improvement by bolstering the body's natural capacity to heal itself.
Preliminary studies have shown that bromelain supplements can reduce inflammation, and therefore pain, in RA sufferers. Studies of people with osteoarthritis have shown that bromelain is as effective as NSAIDs like ibuprofen in the control of pain. Copper, manganese, zinc, sulfur, selenium, and vitamin B complex may all be of benefit as may omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. These oils have demonstrated anti-inflammatory actions in studies, and results have shown that they not only protect the body from adverse side effects, like ulcers, associated with NSAIDs, but they allow for a substantial reduction in medication required to treat pain and swelling.
There are herbs which may help you, such as white willow bark which is a natural pain reliever from which aspirin was originally synthesized. Cat's claw and devil's claw have both been used to reduce symptoms of both osteoarthritis and RA with great success. Many people have found acupuncture, yoga, chiropractic treatments, and visualization techniques to be very effective at alleviating pain.
If your treatment regime is such that you still require the same level of pain medication prescribed by your doctor, you can try products like the kidney complex supplement for kidney protection or milk thistle for liver protection, but make sure that your doctor is made aware of any supplements you're taking, so any potentially harmful interactions can be avoided.
My advice for you, again, would be to consult a qualified naturopath who can test you specifically for all the required minerals and supplements known to treat RA and create a very specialized program for you, addressing the dietary and psychological implications of the disease. I have personally seen a young person with RA, very close to me, who's life was turned around by the hopefulness and empowerment of a knowledgeable naturopath; what started out as a life sentence of harsh medications and a prognosis of steady decline is no longer the case. While the supplements were a big part of the recovery, a bigger part is believing that things can and will change for the better!
