Can't remember like you used to? Maybe Ginkgo Biloba could help. Ginkgo Biloba is scientifically proven to improve blood and oxygen flow to the brain and extremities, making it a valuable botanical to enhance memory function, mental sharpness and other cognitive functions. An ideal supplement for seniors and younger persons with active lifestyles.
Some of ginkgo's actions result from several of its constituents working together, and other actions relate directly to specific constituents. Ginkgo extract seems to affect cognitive deficiency in two ways; it stimulates populations of nerve cells that are still functional, and it protects nerve cells from pathologic influences. Ginkgo flavonoid constituents, which are mainly rutin, are efficient free-radical scavengers. Rutin is known to improve capillary fragility and permeability. Ginkgo contains ginkgolide constituents that competitively inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF) binding at the membrane receptor.
This action might be responsible for beneficial effects in asthma, bronchospasm, hypersensitivity reactions, and circulatory diseases. Ginkgolides antagonize PAF-induced decreases in myocardial contractility and coronary blood flow, and prevent cyclosporin-induced nephrotoxicity. Ginkgo contains ginkgolides A and B. These exert an anti-stress and neuroprotective effect by decreasing corticosteroid synthesis. Ginkgo leaf extract increases cerebral blood flow. There is some evidence that ginkgo might improve cerebral metabolism and protect against ischemia. Ginkgo leaf extract decreases blood viscosity, improves microcirculatory blood flow, protects neural and retinal tissue from hypoxic or oxidative injury, stimulates choline uptake and prevents age-related decline in muscarinic receptors in the hippocampus. There is some suggestion that ginkgo leaf extract might exert a monoamine oxidase inhibiting effect. There is also some suggestion that it shows some activity against Pneumocystis carinii, arrests fibrosis in damaged hepatocytes, and inhibits nitric oxide production in inflammation. Ginkgo can improve vascular blood flow in the corpus cavernosum by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, which helps erectile function.
Dosage: At least 40 milligrams of the 24% concentrated extract, three times daily for a minimum of three months.

I looked Ginkgo Biloba because I was told it could be a preventive to Alzheimers, but I am now hopelessly confused with the hugh range on offer .and wonder which I should get. Also would you recommend taking Omega 3 oils with it ? they are also supposed to be a help with the memory.

The recommended dosage of ginkgo is approximately 240 mg per day or more, taken in three doses. Two 40 mg capsules, each standardized to 24% ginkgo flavones and 6% terpine lactones, taken three times daily would be best. Within studies focusing on the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, typically a 40 mg dose standardized to 24/6 active compounds, taken 3 to 4 times a day was used. If a product does not specify a percentage of these active compounds very close to these two figures, I would avoid it.
There are typically two classes of ginkgo biloba supplements available. These include:
1) The whole leaf for traditional herbalists interested in maintaining the integrity of the complete herb at the expense of the concentration of active compounds; this is the non-extracted, non-standardized ginkgo leaf with all the ingredients present in their natural quantities and correlations; many of these lesser known compounds and flavonoids have yet to be studied, but many researchers maintain that the time-honored effectiveness of ginkgo biloba is due to its whole-form usage just as nature intended.
2) An 'extract' where the known biochemical compounds are isolated from the leaves and concentrated to a higher amount than normally found in nature. Strict controls and measurements insure an exact percentage of just ginkgo flavones (typically 24%) and terpine lactones (typically 6%). This potent extract bears the distinction of being the subject of the vast majority of scientific studies and clinical trials. TerraVita offers both a 40 mg version and 60 mg version of these standardized extracts.
To better your chances of achieving results akin to the scientific studies, one would be best to maintain a similar strength and dosage to the extracts administered in the bulk of the documented clinical trials. In my opinion, therefore, a 24/6 blend of 40 mg ginkgo biloba extract would be a great start. A single capsule dosage increase from 40 mg to 60 mg could be implemented after a few months of treatment. Please note that these are only guidelines, and a qualified healthcare provider should prescribe exact dosages and monitor the situation closely while foreseeing any potentially adverse interactions.
There are numerous studies that support the effectiveness of ginkgo for cognitive function in the elderly; ginkgo biloba has been clinically shown to increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain while protecting cells from free radical damage. Most herbalists and medical practitioners would agree that the benefits of ginkgo are seen over a long period of time - not just a few weeks.
Weekly consumption of fish (ideal source of omega-3 fatty acids) has been associated with a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease according to a few studies. When shopping for fish, look for varieties with very low mercury levels such as wild pacific salmon, flounder, and cod; avoid swordfish, shark, tuna, and other large predatory fish. Alternatively, essential fatty acid capsules can be taken in conjunction with the ginkgo extract, and some research suggests that this is a smart way to go in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's disease. While the studies have focused on fish consumption as opposed to fish oil supplements, specific dosages are unclear, so it is best to use as directed on the bottle. Walnuts, organic eggs, soy, pumpkin seeds, hemp, and flax, would all be excellent additions to a diet deficient in essential fatty acids.
