Author Biography: Shuntaro Tanikawa's first book of poems was published in 1952. In the succeeding decades he has published nearly sixty volumes of verse as well as translations of Mother Goose and "Peanuts," earning him the reputation as one of Japan's most inventive masters of form and language. In 1989 he received the American Book Award for Floating the River in Melancholy.; William I. Elliott is a poet and translator who has lived in Japan for over twenty years. He has translated numerous volumes of Tanikawa's verse.; Kazuo Kawamura teaches English literature at Kanto Gakuin University, where he is chairman of the English Graduate School. He has translated numerous volumes of Tanikawa's verse.
