Commonly called Prince's pine or ground holly, Pipsissewa produces leaves that are characterized as bitter and astringent in Chinese medicine. The systems of the body most affected by this herb are the heart, bladder, small intestines, and the spleen. A known diuretic, astringent, alterative, aperient, and bitter tonic, this herb can be used to treat conditions such as urinary tract infections or arthritis and rheumatic complaints. The key biochemical components of pipsissewa include quinones (including the hydroquinones arbutin and isohomoarbutin), naphthaquinones, chimaphilin, renifolin, flavonoids, methylsalicylate, and tannins.
Pipsissewa has similar but gentler properties than uva ursi in that it contains fewer tannins and similarly disinfects the urinary tract. It is also used as a treatment for arthritis and rheumatic conditions. For urinary inflammations combine two parts pipsissewa with one part uva ursi, half part marshmallow root and quarter part ginger. For arthritic and rheumatic problems combine equal parts pipsissewa, Oregon grape root, sarsaparilla, angelica root, prickly ash and half part licorice root. Take as a decoction, one cup two or three times daily.
