Indigo - Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria), with loosely clustered pealike yellow blossoms and False Indigo (B. australis) with similar clusters of blue flowers, commonly called Baptisia, are both attractive in the garden and are important herbs for medicine and commerce.
Propagation: By seed; by root division in spring.
Nature of Plant: Becomes a tall bushy clump, often reaching 4 or 5 feet in height, with much branching stems and terminal spikes of blossoms changing into spectacular pods; useful for flower arrangements.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 4 feet.
Cultural Requirements: Both varieties grow in dry, sandy soil in full sun for free blooming, slow growing and resent moving.
Uses
Root: (Medicinal) Wild Indigo - In typhoid and scarlet fevers, diphtheria, emetic, externally and as a gargle in sore throat, ulcers, gangrene, antiseptic; False Indigo - emetic.
Woody Stalk: (Industrial) Blue dye as inferior substitute for indigo.
Dosage: Boil one-half ounce of the dried root in a pint of water for ten minutes. Of this, take only one tablespoon every three or four hours. If there is nausea or sick feeling, diminish the dose accordingly. For children, give half or less according to size and age; of the tincture, take two to five drops.

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the pot, cover and let steep for 2-4 minutes. Pour into your cup; add milk and sugar to taste.
Iced tea brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 5 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea itself. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into the serving pitcher straining the tea bags. Add ice and top-up with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste.
