Description
Clary Sage Salvia sclarea L.
Family: Lamiaceae.
Other Names: Sauge sclarée (French); Muskateller-Salbei (German); moscatella (Italian); salvia esclarea (Spanish).
Description: Clary sage is a robust perennial herb of up to 1 m in height, with square stems, large green leaves and attractive blue and white flowers borne amongst leafy, violet-coloured bracts. The name Salvia is derived from the Latin salvere (to feel well) or salvus (healthy) and several species are used medicinally. Best known are S. officinalis, S. fruticosa and S. lavandulifolia. In China, the roots of red sage or danshen (S. miltiorrhiza) are used for circulatory problems. In southern Africa, S. africana-caerulea and others are traditional cold and flu remedies. In Mexico, a cultigen known botanically as S. divinorum is used as a hallucinogen.
Origin: Southern Europe to central Asia (S. sclarea). Commercial cultivation occurs mainly in eastern Europe, Russia and Asia.
Parts Used: Dried leaves (Salviae sclareae herba) or the essential oil.
Uses and Properties: Clary sage is particularly popular for the treatment of wounds, dyspeptic, urinary and menstrual disorders; the essential oil is becoming popular in aromatherapy. It is used in much the same way as common sage (S. officinalis) but is considered to be less effective. The oil is used in soaps and perfumes (e.g. eau-de-cologne) and in alcoholic beverages (e.g. vermouth and liqueurs).
Preparation and Dosage: Clary sage is used in much the same way as common sage (S. officinalis).
Active Ingredients: Like other Salvia species, the herb is rich in flavonoids (flavones), rosmarinic acid (up to 4.6%) and essential oil. The oil differs markedly from that of S. officinalis in that it is rich in linalool (up to 30%), linalyl acetate (up to 75%), beta-caryophyllene and myrcene (up to 4.5%). Extracts contain a diterpene, sclareol, that is used as a starting material in chemical synthesis of other diterpenes (such as amber oxide) and in the perfume industry.
Pharmacological Effects: Clary sage is considered to be pharmacologically similar to common sage but the oil constituents suggest that the two are not the same. Clary sage oil is thought to be less toxic.
Satus: Traditional medicine.
