Description
Medicinal Usage
the "torment" plant - is what medieval physicians once called erect cinquefoil, because they believed it would cure almost any pain. They attributed powerful medicinal properties to this modest herb with dainty four-petaled yellow flowers. Over the years, herbalists specified the plant for fevers, syphilis, measles, smallpox, and warts. Indeed, as late as the 17th century the English court apothecary and herbalist John Parkinson wrote that, when steeped overnight in wine and then distilled, erect cinquefoil would "expel any venom or poison, or the plague, or any fever or horror, or the shaking fit that happens."
Since then, the employment of erect cinquefoil has declined to the extent that folk healers now esteem it chiefly as an astringent, a fever-reducing agent, and an agent that stops the flow of blood. Its rhizome (underground stem) is the source of the tannin that accounts for the plant's astringent properties.
Modern herbals cite a tea made from the rhizome as an antipyretic (fever-reducing agent), an external astringent, and an antihemorrhagic (an agent capable of stopping the flow of blood). Scientists who have studied these uses question the tea's efficacy in reducing fever. But they have evidence that it may help stop moderate external bleeding and that it most likely does act an an external astringent, causing the skin and capillaries to contract.
General Herb Information
Habitat: Wet meadows, damp woods, mossy places.

Uses: Because of its tannin content, erect cinquefoil has been used in the tanning of leathers, and the brownish-red rhizome has also been the source of a red dye.
