Barberry

This attractive, but thorny, deciduous shrub is native to the open woods of Europe but also grows wild in the Eastern United States. Striking plumes of yellow flowers arch gracefully and abundantly from woody stems. The barberry, however, has been cultivated in gardens for its berries which have been used in both culinary and medicinal practices for centuries. The stem, root, and bark have been used in medicinal preparations since ancient times, so all parts of this exceptional plant are beneficial from a health standpoint. The presence of bitter alkaloids in the roots, bark, stems, and fruit of the barberry stimulate bile secretion, aid in digestion, and promote healthy liver and gallbladder function. Additionally, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties, to name a few, make barberry an invaluable part of a treatment program for a wide variety of disorders. Those with stubborn skin infections or compromised digestive abilities may find barberry to be very beneficial herb.

Black Walnut

The bittersweet and nutritious oil of the black walnut has a long history of medicinal and food uses. Once used as treatment for diphtheria and syphilis, black walnut is now used mostly for the astringent properties of its hulls and bark. It has been used world-wide for several centuries for its anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal actions and remains in use today. Studies of black walnut are scarce. However, the existing data coupled with overwhelming cross-cultural use of black walnut in treating similar health conditions for centuries cannot be ignored. Further studies are certainly warranted and deserving for the use of black walnut in Western medicine.

Fennel

Considered primarily indigenous to the Mediterranean shores, fennel has been closely associated with ancient cultures and followed the spread of civilization. Fennel is mentioned in Greek legends, poetry, and other ancient writings, and praised for its medicinal value in many aspects of health and longevity. Today, fennel is used primarily for digestive concerns and gastrointestinal afflictions. Some scientific research has demonstrated that colicky babies can benefit from supplementation of fennel. Fennel has shown to be effective for conditions of the upper respiratory tract as well.

Directions

Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
