Description

Patchouli
Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. (= P. patchouli Pellet.)

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Patchouly; Patchouli (French); Patschulipflanze (German); patchouly (Italian).

Description: An aromatic perennial herb of up to 1 m in height, with hairy, square stems and opposite pairs of soft, broad leaves. Pale pink tubular flowers are borne in whorls along an elongated floral axis, but the plant usually remains vegetative and rarely flowers. Indian patchouli or Java patchouli (P. heyneanus) is also a commercial source of essential oil. It differs from P. cablin in the smooth stems and the fact that it flowers regularly.

Origin: Indo-Malaysia (from India to the Philippines and Malaysia; also on Reunion and Mauritius). The plant is now widely cultivated in warm climates.

Parts Used: Leaves (fresh or dried) (Patchouli folium), essential oil (Patchoulia aetheroleum).

Therapeutic Category: Traditional aphrodisiac (herb); cosmetic, insect repellent (oil).

Uses and Properties: Patchouli is important in traditional medicine in China, Malaysia and India, not only of its alleged aphrodisiac properties, but also to neat a wide range of ailments, including colds and flu, fever and headache. Externally it is applied to repel insects and to alleviate an itching and inflamed skin, The essential oil extracted from the leaves and stems by steam distillation has become very popular in aromatherapy, to treat menstrual pains, mild depression, anxiety and skin complaints. It is used to give fragrance to cosmetics and shampoos, and specifically in insect repellents and leech repellents.

Preparation and Dosage: Fresh or dried leaves are used as tea but the use of the oil (on its own or in formulated preparations) has become more important in recent years.

Active Ingredients: The essential oil contains numerous monoterpenes and sesquiterpenoids. The main ingredient is known as patchouli alcohol or patchoulol, a unique sesquiterpene. Furthermore, dhelwangin (an antibacterial sesquiterpene), and several phenylpropanoids, such as eugenol, benzaldehyde, have been recorded.

Pharmacological Effects: The pharmacological properties of the herb and its oil are relatively poorly studied. The observed antimicrobial properties are plausibly explained by the presence of sesquiterpenes and eugenol. An anti-emetic effect has been described. The insect-repellent activity of the oil has been the main focus of research.

Status: Traditional medicine.
