Description: Gumweed is a perennial plant with toothed, simple leaves and attractive dark yellow flower heads borne on leafy stalks. Surrounding each flowering head are prominent, sharp-tipped, green involucral bracts that give a bristly, thistle-like appearance to the unopened heads. G. camporam is an acceptable alternative source of material and can be used interchangeably with G. squarrosa. Two other useful species are (G. robusta and G. humilis.
Origin: North America - northwestern parts of the USA (G. squarrosa) or the southwestern parts of the USA and Mexico (G. camporum). G. squarrosa has become a weed in Britain and Australia and is nowadays often a source of raw material.

Also present are phenolic acids, a volatile oil (mainly borneol, camphor, limonene and methyleugenol), flavonoids (kaempferol, luteolin), gallo- and ellagitannins, polyacetylenes (matricarianol) and triterpene saponins.
Pharmacological Effects: Gumweeds are known to have in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity which is plausible considering its content of various terpenoids that interfere with the stability of biomembranes and phenolic compounds, that inactivate proteins via non-covalent bond formation with phenolic OH-groups. Spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory effects were also shown experimentally.
