Description
Name
Sambucus nigra L. (Caprifoliaceae), commonly called Sambucus, European Elder Flower, Black Elder Flower, and Elder Flower. In French it is Sureau noir; in German, Schwarzer Holunder and Holunderbiuten.
Source:
Remedies are made from the dried flowers of this small tree. Elder grows in most parts of Europe, and they are sometimes planted as an ornamental.
History
Elder is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs. In medieval times, elderberries were given to women in order to bring on menstruation. In combination with peppermint, elder was used to treat colds and coughs. The tree itself, however, was thought to be the source of bad luck. Today, elder flowers are mainly used in the making of cosmetics. In Europe, it is still a popular remedy for the common cold.
Traditional Claims
Diaphoretic (something used to cause perspiration) and diuretic. Traditional healers, and even physicians until well into the 20th century, often confused cause and effect. Because profuse sweating often occurs just when a fever breaks, it only seemed natural to give something to a patient in order to make them sweat. In fact, the sweating was a result of the fever breaking (defervescence).
Commission E Recommendations
Elder is used to treat colds and flu.
Proven Effects
Elder is rich in the flavonoids (quercetin and rutin), and is, therefore, a good source of antioxidants. Unlike Hawthorn, which also contains goodly amounts of quercetin, elder does not contain substances that directly affect the heart. In addition to potential antioxidant benefits, results of more recent clinical and laboratory investigations suggest a number of other possible benefits. Quercetin is under investigation as a modulator of tumor growth, and it has shown some positive effects in clinical trials. Large doses, however, cause muscle pain and kidney damage which may limit its usefulness. Closely related synthetic molecules may yet prove to be potent anticancer medications.
A placebo-controlled, double-blind study of elderberry extract as an antiviral was carried out on a group of individuals living in an agricultural community (kibbutz) during an outbreak of influenza B Panama in 1993. Volunteers treated with elderberry had fewer symptoms, recovered more quickly, and produced more antiviral antibodies than the controls (individuals given a placebo).
Another potential application may be in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and lymphedema. When lymphatic channel obstruction occurs, whether from infection (such as elephantiasis), or even after surgery (painful arm swelling sometimes occurs after radical mastectomy), fluid accumulates, and the extremities swell. The swelling causes pain, and often breakdown of the skin. A mixture of semisynthetic flavonoids made from rutin improves the circulation and reduces the edema.
