Vitex, or chaste tree berry, is a popular herb in Europe, where it is used to balance hormone levels. It addresses luteal phase defect, a common cause of menstrual abnormalities resulting in an increased ratio of estrogen to progesterone. Common symptoms of luteal phase abnormalities are heavy periods, abnormally frequent periods, a lack of menstruation, PMS and breast pain during the menstrual cycle.
