| | Description
Name
Vitex agnus castus L. (Verbenaceae), commonly called the Chaste tree, Monk's pepper tree, Abraham's balm, and wild pepper. In German it is Keiischlarnmfruchte.
Source
Remedies are made from the fruits of wild trees, usually supplied whole. This tree came from the Mediterranean region, but now grows in the United States. The word Vitex is the old Latin name for the plant. Agnus, of course, means lamb, and castus is latin for chaste.
History
The name derives from the fact that, in Medieval Europe, this tree was held to be the symbol of chastity. Drinking tea made from the leaves was thought to decrease the libido, which is why the medieval monks drank it in great quantities. Chinese herbalists reached the same conclusions about this plant and used it in the same way as the Europeans. Today, this herb is widely used by Germans to treat menstrual disorders and to promote ovulation.
Traditional Claims
Galactogenic, emmenagogue, cholagogue, carminative, rheumatic, and for the treatment of impotence.
Commission E Recommendations
Chasteberry is used for the regulation of irregular menstrual cycles, premenstrual complaints, PMS, poor lactation, and sore or tender breasts.
Proven Effects
The barks of chasteberry contains at least four different flavonoids. One, called leutolin, is also found in artichokes and is thought to account for that plant's ability to lower cholesterol levels (leutolin prevents cholesterol synthesis). This same flavonoid is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and an antioxidant. Extracts of this plant cause the brain to produce less of a hormone called prolactin, which is why, in controlled clinical trials of women with menstrual irregularities, treatment with extracts of chaste tree fruit tends to normalize menstrual flow. Since treatment with this herb clearly reduces prolactin blood concentrations, and since the production of breast milk is partly under the control of prolactin, chaste tree may help improve milk production. That possibility, however, has never been studied in a clinical trial.
Dosage: 3-6 grams in defusion of the dried and ground berries three times daily; of the tincture, 10-30 drops. | |
