Description
Barley affects the spleen, stomach, lungs, and colon with nutrient, diuretic, and demulcent actions. Sometimes called 'pearl barley', it has been traditionally used to treat colitis, swelling and tumors, and jaundice. The chemical constituents include proteins, prolamines, albumin, sugars, starch, fats, B vitamins. The germinated seeds contain alkaloids hordenine and gramine.
Barley is used as a mucilaginous porridge during convalescence, diarrhea and bowel inflammation (colitis). In Chinese traditional medicine it is used as an anti-inflammatory, a diuretic, for relieving gallbladder problems, reducing swelling and tumors, and for clearing jaundice. Dry-roasted barley can be ground and drunk as a healthful beverage substitute for coffee. Boiled in water and drunk as a tea, it is used to help clear the skin of pimples and lesions. For eczema and acne, a combination of barley flour and aloe vera gel can be applied as a facial mask before going to bed. It is then washed off in the morning.

First of all, it would be advisable for you to consult with a gynecologist and endocrinologist if you are not already. The thyroid gland is involved in ovarian hormone production, among other various physiological and metabolic functions, and many women experience hypothyroidism as they enter menopause. Symptoms include fatigue, depression, irritability, weakness, decreased libido, weight gain, and memory loss. Some women have had success with hormone replacement therapy like natural estrogen, for example. Obviously, I have no idea what your situation is or what would be the best course of treatment for you. This is where a specialist like a reproductive endocrinologist, for example, would be the person to see.
As far as bringing back the thyroid gland into proper balance, there are various foods, vitamins, minerals, and supplements that may be beneficial for you. Enriched green foods or food supplements are often recommended for thyroid function: these would include chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass juice, or barley grass juice. Two herbs used in ayurvedic medicine include ashwaghanda and myrrh; these have both been shown to boost thyroid function. The amino acid, L-tyrosine, and a quality fish oil supplement would also support thyroid function. This article outlines a natural approach to combating hypothyroidism and it offers some more great choices.
With respect to your cough and cold, this may or may not be linked to the condition with the thyroid. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that respiratory symptoms like coughs and colds are more common in those with hypothyroidism. So, while I could recommend supplements to treat the symptoms, it is much more important to see a specialist who can connect the dots, and determine the underlying root cause of these symptoms.
