Medicinal Usage
Yew was used as a purgative, and to treat heart and liver diseases, gout, rheumatism, arthritis and urinary infections. Culpeper said "though it is sometimes given usefully in obstructions of the liver and bilious complaints, those experiments seem too few to recommend it to be used without the greatest caution." The plant is poisonous.

A native of Britain, the yew has long been revered as a sacred tree, and as a potent protection against evil. Since prehistoric times, and certainly during the Middle Ages, the wood has been highly prized for making longbows and axe-handles. A yew spear found near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex has been estimated to be some 150,000 years old. The botanical name Taxus is derived from the Greek for arrow. Indeed, the crushed seeds were once used as an arrow poison. Pliny said that the tree was so toxic that "even wine-flasks for travellers made of its wood in Gaul are known to have caused death." Although Gerard claimed that the yew in England was not poisonous, he said that "in most countries, it hath such a malign quality, that it is not safe to sleep, or long to rest under the shadow thereof." In folklore the tree, being evergreen and long-lived, was a symbol of immortality, or life after death. As such, it was often planted in graveyards. In some places, the trees are reputed to be so old that they may have existed before the early Christians built their churches. To bring cuttings of yew into the home was said to lead to a death in the family. Even damaging the tree was considered to bring bad luck. Smoke from the burning leaves was supposed to repel gnat and mosquitoes, as well as kill rats and mice. The tree was listed by Aelfric.
