Spikenard Nardostachys grandiflora or Nardostachys jatamansi (Nard)
Medicinal Usage
Oil of spikenard was taken to relieve nervous headaches, indigestion, insomnia and depression. Externally, it was used to treat skin rashes and inflammations. Gerard said that "it provoketh urine, helps gnawing pains of the stomach, dries up the defluxions that trouble the belly and entrails, as also those that molest the head and breast. It stays the fluxes of the belly, and those of the womb, being used in a pessary, and in a bath it helps the inflammation thereof."
Miscellaneous
A native of Asia, spikenard was mentioned in the Bible, and used to anoint the feet of Jesus at the Last Supper. The perfume extracted from the root was held in high esteem by the Romans. Pliny said that the Indian 'nard' held "a 4 foremost place among perfumes," adding that in Rome "the next most highly praised kind is the Syrian, then that from Gaul, and in the third place is the Cretan." The plant's botanical name Nardostachys is derived from the Greek for spike, or ear of corn.
