Description
Figwort, also known as Knotted Figwort, Throatwort, Scrofula Plant, Rosenoble, Bunny In The Grass, Carpenter's Square, and Xuan Shen, is native to Europe, Central Asia and North America. It is found wild in marshy areas, but is also cultivated for its use in herbal medicine.
Because the nodes on its root resembled swollen lymph nodes, it was used in their treatment and in the treatment of tumors, abscesses and other skin eruptions. Figwort gained some fame in the 17th century during the siege of La Rochelle by the forces of Richelieu, where it was eaten in order to stave off starvation. In traditional Chinese medicine, Figwort is used as a Yin Tonic. It has also been used as a stimulating cardio tonic, having action similar to that of Rehmannia Root.
Figwort has been used with great success, both internally and externally, in the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, for which it has been used in combination with Burdock Root and Yellow Dock. Figwort is also a mild diuretic and laxative, and has been used with Rhubarb Root for such purposes. Active constituents of Figwort include saponins, glycosides, and flavonoids. Figwort is among the most useful herbs as a general tonic for the lymphatic system.
