Medieval herbalists used figwort to treat the "king's evil", or scrofula, a tubercular disease of the lymph glands in the neck; hence its botanical name Scrophularia, and its common name 'throatwort'. 'figwort' refers to the herb's ancient use in the treatment of haemorrhoids or ficus (Latin for 'fig'). It was also used as a mild laxative, a heart stimulant, a pain reliever and a blood cleansing tonic. Applied externally, figwort was used for sores, ulcers, scratches, minor wounds and skin diseases, including eczema and fungal infections.
Miscellaneous
Despite the unpleasant smell of the flowers, wasps are greatly attracted to figworts. The herb was commonly known as 'carpenter's square' because of its four-cornered stem. In France, the plant is known as herb de siège because during the year-long siege of La Rochelle by Cardinal Richelieu in 1628 it was said to be the only nourishment available to the Huguenot garrison.
