Description

Medicinal Usage

Wild geranium root was a well-known remedy among native Americans and early settlers. The Meskwakis of the upper Midwest used the root to heal sore gums, pyorrhea, toothache, and hemmorrhoids. The root boiled in milk was a popular remedy for intestinal ailments of children. Diarrhea, dysentery, leukorrhea, gonorrhea, and syphilis have all reportedly responded to treatment with the root. Many have used a gargle made from the powdered root to relieve canker sores. Basically, the root is useful wherever a styptic or astringent is called for. The root contains tannins and gallic acid.

General Herb Information

A denizen of open woods and field edges from Maine to Manitoba, south to Georgia, and west to Oklahoma, this indigenous American plant is a showy addition to herb gardens.

It is an erect, hardy perennial standing 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall. Long-stemmed leaves arise from the roots while short-stemmed to sessile opposite leaves grow on the main stem. They are divided into three to seven lobes with sharp teeth at the lobe's ends. The leaves are somewhat hairy and mottled with whitish-green splotches - hence the specific name maculatum (spotted). The attractive rose-purple flowers, I to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, are borne on terminal panicles. Wild geranium blooms from April to June. One form, G. maculatum f. albiflorum, has white flowers. The roots are horizontal, about one-half inch in diameter, contorted, knobby, and pinkish-gray on the interior.

Wild geranium grows from seed collected in late summer and sown in fall or the following spring. Roots may also be divided in the fall. Established plants self-sow freely. Give plants six-inch spacings.

This plant is particularly attractive when grown in colonies of six or more. It needs partial shade and good drainage and will grow in a variety of soils, tolerating a pH range of 4.5 to 7. The root gathered in autumn is the part used.
