Description
Pomegranate Punica granatum L.
Family: Punicaceae.
Other Names: Grenadier (French); Granatapfelbaum (German); melograno (Italian).
Description: Pomegranate is a spiny, deciduous shrub or small tree of about 5 m in height. It has small ]eaves clustered at the branch tips, attractive orange-red flowers, a characteristic large fleshy fruit crowned with a persistent calyx and numerous seeds, each with a bright red, fleshy, edible layer.
Origin: Southeastern Europe. The plant appears to be an ancient cultigen (suggested to be Eve's apple in the Bible) and is still a minor fruit crop and medicinal plant in the Mediterranean region.
Parts Used: Fruit pericarp (pomegranate fruit rind - Granati pericarpium) or the stem and root bark (Granati cortex).
Uses and Properties: Root bark is traditionally used as a vermifuge to treat intestinal parasites, mainly tapeworm. The dried fruit rind or the fruit pulp is a common remedy for upset stomachs and especially to treat diarrhoea. Fruits are used to produce grenadine, a cordial, and the rind to tan leather.
Preparation and Dosage: In traditional medicine, infusions or tinctures of the fresh or dried fruit rind are taken, usually with honey added to counter the bitter taste. Decoctions of the root bark (sometimes with stem bark, leaves or young fruit added) were widely used as a tapeworm remedy up to the first half of the twentieth century.
Active Ingredients: The fruit rind contains gallo/ellagitannins - mainly punicalin and punicalagin, at very high concentrations (up to 28%). Several piperidine alkaloids are present in the roots, bark, leaves and young fruit but not in the rind. The major active alkaloids are pelletierine (= isopelletierine) and N-methylisopelletierine. Also present is a homotropane alkaloid, pseudopelletierine.
Pharmacological Effects: The very high tannin content easily explains the antidiarrhoeal effect. The alkaloids interact strongly with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. They will narcotise tapeworms so that they lose their grip, and are expelled. Unfortunately, the alkaloids are absorbed through the intestine and cause undesirable CNS effects.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
