Carob Bean, also called St. John's Bread, is originally from the Mediterranean region and the western part of Asia. Today, it is grown mostly in Mediterranean countries. The gum from Carob seeds is called Locust Bean Gum. The dried, powdered pods of this plant are used in herbal medicine.
Many plants have a rich history of use throughout time, but few can probably out boast this tree. It is said that the sweet, pulpy fruit pods of the tree were the "locusts" that St. John survived on in the wilderness, and thus the name associated with it. In 1811, these pods were the principle food of the British Cavalry, and they have been much used for cattle fodder. At one time, the seeds were in high demand by chemists, as singers thought that they cleared the throat. The seeds were even once used by jewelers as the original carat weight. Even medicinal uses have been found for the pods, with laxative and demulcent qualities being associated with them. The main constituents of Carob Bean are large carbohydrates and tannins. They may also bind to (and thereby inactivate) toxins and inhibit growth of bacteria. The pods are rich in protein and sugar, and have often been proclaimed "wholesome for man or beast." The seeds and pods can be fermented and distilled, with the drink retaining the appealing flavor of the pods. The ground-up Carob seeds produce a protein rich flour that contains no starch or sugar, and is ideal for diabetics. Tannin-rich Carob has been used successfully in the treatment of acute-onset diarrhea.

I would like to buy the St. John's Bread whole pod. As a child my family would eat this as a treat. I would like my family to try St. John's Bread too. It's not fattening, it's healthy, it's chewy and it takes a long time to eat. I have tried to get it from other sources but they said that our government put a ban on it because of some kind tree bacteria. They also said that they cannot kill this specific bacteria and they are afraid that it will infect other trees. This was supposed to have taken place about ten years ago. I am wondering if they have found a cure for that bacteria yet? If they have where can I but the whole pods? Please reply. Thanks......
