General Herb Information
Bugloss - Four interesting plants of the Borage family, with characteristic hairy leaves and stems and with flowers that are rose colored at first and later turn a beautiful light or purplish blue are Dyer's Bugloss or real alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria); Common Alkanet (Anchusa ofticinalis) which is not real alkanet; Italian Bugloss (Anchusa azurea) variety Dropmore; Viper's Bugloss or Blue-weed (Echium vulgare).
Propagation: By seed, quite easy germination, self-sows freely; by root division in the spring.
Nature of Plant: Italian Bugloss grows to 5 feet, the flowers 3/4 inch across, are in purplish blue clusters; a vivid high spot in the garden and splendid for flower arrangements.
Common Alkanet grows to 18 inches, flowers 3/4 inch across, bright blue and useful for masses in flower border.
Dyer's Bugloss is much cultivated in southern Europe, flowers are purplish blue, the root very large in proportion to the rest of the plant, height of plant 20 inches.
Viper's Bugloss, an erect bristly plant, 2 1/2 feet tall, found on road-sides, in meadows and dry, waste places, stems and leaves sometimes spotted red, flowers a vivid blue, grows best in chalky, gravelly soil. In rich soil plant grows coarse, flowers scanty and not so colorful.
Spacing of Mature Plants: From 12 to 18 inches.
Cultural Requirements: In light, sandy, well drained soil in sunny spot, except Italian Bugloss which prefers part shade and some moisture; in dividing plants in spring, be careful not to break the long, branching, brittle roots. Any roots left in the ground will develop a new plant.
Uses
Plant: (Medicinal) Italian Bugloss, removes inflammation, cooling infusion induces perspiration; Common Alkanet, expectorant, aperient, induces perspiration.
Root: (Industrial) Dyer's Bugloss, red dye for staining wood imitation mahogany and rosewood, to color oil, furniture polish, spurious port wine, dental wax, pomade, leather, as acid-alkaline indicator by impregnating white paper called alkannin paper; (Medicinal) Viper's Bugloss, astringent, blood purifier.
