Description
Ivy, Common Hedera helix (Climbing Ivy)
Medicinal Usage
Although all parts of ivy are poisonous, the berries were taken as a purgative. An infusion of the leaves was recommended for rheumatic pains, bronchial complaints, and whooping cough. Applied externally as a poultice, the leaves were used to treat burns, scalds, sores, wounds, painful swellings, bruises, neuralgia and sciatica. Culpeper said that "the yellow berries are good against the jaundice, and a drunken surfeit." He also said that they "prevent and heal the plague."
Miscellaneous
Ivy has been a sacred plant from at least Christian times. Pliny noted that it was used by "the peoples of Thrace at solemn festivals to decorate the wands of the fertility god 'Father Liver' (Dionysus, or Bacchus), and also the worshippers' helmets and shields, although it is harmful to all trees and plants and destructive to tombs and walls, and very agreeable to chilly snakes, so that it is surprising that any honour has been paid to it." During the Middle Ages the plant was reputed to be the enemy of the vine and would, therefore, prevent drunkenness, hence wine was often drunk out of ivy wood cups. Although ivy was believed to be a protective magical plant, in some areas of England it was considered unlucky to bring it into the house. It was also said that to lie down under an ivy tree could bring about a sleep which there was no awakening.
