Description

Common Ivy
Hedera helix L.

Family: Araliaceae.

Other Names: Lierre grimpant, lierre commun (French); Efeu (German); edera (Italian); hiedra (Spanish).

Description: A woody climber with creeping stems that cling to objects by means of aerial climbing roots. Vegetative leaves are three- to five-lobed and much smaller than those of flowering stems (larger and ovate, without distinct lobes). Inconspicuous flowers are borne in spherical groups and are followed by black berries.

Origin: Western Asia and Europe (central, western and southern parts, including the Mediterranean region).

Parts Used: Leaves (Hederae folium) , sometimes the woody stems (homoeopathy).

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, spasmolytic, secretolytic.

Uses and Properties: Extracts of dried leaves are to treat coughs (including pertussis), spastic bronchitis and chronic catarrhs of the respiratory tract. It also shows promise as an antifungal agent against Candida albicans and is active against parasites and molluscs. Wood extracts are mostly used as an ingredient of creams, lotions, shampoos (as emollients and for itch relief in skin disorders) and topical anticellulitis products.

Active Ingredients: The leaves contain 5-8% bidesmosidic saponins of oleanolic acid, hederagenin and bayogenin, known as hederasaponins or hederacosides B to I. Of these, hederasaponin C (also known as hederacoside C) is the main compound, with levels of up to 7%. In dried leaves the more potent monodesmosidic saponines can be formed upon hydrolysis. Also present are various phenolics, as well as polyacetylenes, typically falcarinol, falcarinone and 11-dehydrofalcarinol. Seeds contain large amounts of saponins and are considered to be toxic to humans.

Pharmacological Effects: The expectorant properties of the saponins can be explained by an indirect stimulation of the nervus vagus in the stomach. Several double-blind placebo-controlled studies have shown efficacy in chronic obstructive bronchitis, with few or no side effects at doses equivalent to 200 mg of crude drug per day (children) or 400 mg (adults). The saponins (or their monodesmoside derivatives) are cytotoxic and haemolytic in higher concentrations. Falcarinol is a skin allergen and is known from other Araliaceae, including Schefflera species.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; clinical studies+.

Preparation and Dosage: The recommended daily dose of ivy leaf is 0.3 g per day, or 1.5 g twice per day (depending on the source).
