Other Names: Éleuthérocoque, ginseng di Sibérie (French); Stachelpanax, Sibirischer Ginseng (German); eleuterococco (Italian).
Description: Siberian ginseng is a woody shrub with erect, prickly stems, compound leaves and inconspicuous flowers produced in multi-flowered umbels. It is closely related to various North American species of Aralia that are also used in traditional medicine and is sometimes confused with them. These are American spikenard (Aralia racemosa) , the roots and rhizomes of which are a traditional panacea (cure all) of the Native Americans, wild sarsaparilla (A. nudicaulis) which is used in much the same way and Hercule's club (A. spinosa), the bark of which has been used in the eastern parts of the USA as traditional medicine.
Origin: North-eastern Asia (eastern Siberia).
Parts Used: Dried roots and rhizomes (Eleutherococci radix).
Therapeutic Category: Tonic.
Uses and Properties: Siberian ginseng is used as an adaptogenic tonic, in the same way as real ginseng (Panax ginseng). It is used to counteract fatigue and stress, decreasing physical and mental capacity and as support during convalescence. It was used by Russian athletes in the 1984 Moscow Olympics and has become a popular tonic in the former USSR.
Active Ingredients: The roots and rhizomes contain a diversity of phytochemicals - so-called eleutherosides (a confusing name, since various classes of compounds are involved, such as coumarins, lignans and phenylpropanoids). These include triterpenoids and triterpene saponins (eleutherosides I-M), lignans and their glycosides (such as sesamin and syringa-resinol), coumarins (isofraxidin), beta-sitosterol, daucosterol, liriodendrin and polysaccharides.
Pharmacological Effects: Several animal and human studies have been carried out in Russia, indicating that the product is comparable to real ginseng. It appears to improve endurance, immune competence and stress resistance.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+; WHO 2.
Preparation and Dosage: A daily dose of 2 - 3 g of dry root, taken as tea or as alcoholic extracts (or equivalent preparations), is recommended.
