Description
Licorice is one of our most widely researched and respected medicinal herbs. It has been used since at least 500 BC and drugs based on Licorice extracts are still listed in official pharmacopoeia as remedies for gastric ulcers and inflammation.
The Greeks called Licorice "Sythian root" and used it for asthma and coughs, while in traditional Chinese herbalism it is called the "great detoxifier" or "great harmoniser" and is believed to drive toxins and poisons from the system and also eliminate harmful side effects of other herbs.
The variety of Licorice used in Western herbal traditions is Glycyrrhiza glabra: it originates in the Mediterranean region and the Middle East and has been cultivated in Europe since at least the 16th century. The Chinese use an Asian species, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao), which has similar actions. It is regarded as one of the most important of Chinese tonics and is often called the grandfather of "herbs". Pieces of Chinese Licorice root are often given to children to chew in order to promote muscle growth.
Licorice has a hormonal effect, stimulating the adrenal cortex due to the presence of lycyrrhizin, which is some 50 times sweeter than sucrose, and encourages production of such hormones as hydrocortisone. Lycyrrhizin is an anti-viral agent extracted from licorice root which research suggests could be the most effective defense against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
Licorice plant is very soothing and demulcent, making it ideal for gastric ulceration. It is also a digestive stimulant and laxative and is often used for constipation.
