Description

The bitter orange, also known as Seville orange, is familiar to us in the form of that favorite breakfast delicacy, marmalade. The name reputedly originates from the French "marmelade", a traditional mixture of stewed apples and quince, although a more picturesque legend has it derived from "mal de mer" or, sea sickness. This fits in neatly with one of bitter orange's many properties: it is a potent anti-emetic and can help combat nausea, travel sickness and morning sickness.

The plant originated in China, where it is still extensively used to relieve nausea and coughs. By the Middle Ages, Bitter Orange was a favorite with Arabian physicians. In the 16th century, an Italian princess named Anna-Marie de Nerola is reputed to have discovered an oil, neroli, that could be extracted from the flowers. The princess used her discovery to scent her gloves. Today, with neroli oil costing around £1,000 a litre or more, most people would consider it far too precious to lavish on any sort of clothing.

Bergamot oil is distilled from the fruit and is used in aromatherapy for urinary tract problems. It has strong anti-bacterial properties which combat infections and will also increase the photosensitivity of the skin. It was once added to sunbathing lotions to speed up the tanning process - However, recent concerns over the links between sun-tanning and cancer have now made this practice less common.

The sweet orange (C. sinensis) is, of course, a good source of Vitamin C but it lacks Bitter Orange's medicinal properties. Use Seville oranges for indigestion, nausea or add Bitter Orange Extract to cough mixtures.
