Description: Bitter orange is an evergreen tree (up to 10 m), with gland-dotted leaves and fragrant, white flowers. The short leaf stalk is conspicuously winged in the upper part. The form used for bergamot oil is known as C. bergamia (or C. aurantium subsp. bergamia). It is a smaller tree - up to 5 m.
Origin: Citrus species originally came from southern and southeastern Asia and have a long and complicated history in cultivation. Bitter orange is grown in the Mediterranean and in many other warm parts of the world, while bergamot is cultivated mainly in Calabria (Italy) and France.
Parts Used: Green fruits, peels of ripe fruits, flowers and oil are used. Most of the inner, spongy, white part of the peel (albedo) is removed and the glandular outer part (flavedo) yields bitter orange peel (Aurantii pericarpium). Note that orange peel (Citri sinensis pericarpium) is obtained from the sweet orange (C. sinensis). Unripe fruit (Aurantii fructus immaturi) is the zhi shi of Chinese medicine.
Uses and Properties: Bitter orange peel is mainly used to enhance appetite and to treat dyspeptic complaints. There are numerous traditional uses for both sweet and bitter peel, such as the treatment of minor sleeplessness. Zhi shi is used for flatulence and bloating.
Active Ingredients: The peel contains essential oil (mainly limonene, linalool, terpineol), bitter flavanone glycosides (naringin and neohesperidin) and bitter triterpenes (limonin).
Pharmacological Effects: Bitter compounds are known to stimulate appetite by increasing the secretion of gastric juices. The non-bitter flavonoids sweet orange peel are thought to act as venotonics.
Notes: Marmalade is made from bitter oranges. Neroli oil (30% linalool; used in perfumes, such as eau-de-cologne) is distilled from the flowers.
Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+.
Preparation and Dosage: The daily dose of 4 - 6 g of dried peel, usually taken as a tea.
