Description
Black currant (Ribes nigrum L.), according to the results of a 2000 study out of Japan, helped alleviate symptoms of eye fatigue and "work-induced transient refractive alteration" from viewing a VDT or video disaplay terminal. Black currant anthocyanoside (BCA) was administered to healthy subjects in the context of a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. The results conclude that black currant improves dark adaptation (night vision) and can provide support for the adverse effects of prolonged periods of time in front of a computer monitor.
A group of antioxidant-rich flavonoids called anthocyanosides is believed to be the active compound that protects the eye, reduces inflammation, modulates retinal enzyme activity, and strengthens blood vessels. This, theoretically, could result in better night vision as the flavonoids speed up the regeneration of a substance called rhodpsin - a dark pigment utilized by the rods in the eye for night vision. Some research has revealed positive results with bilberry, demonstrating how subjects with poor night vision experienced an enhanced ability to adapt to the dark.
Other research, however, has yet to confirm this: a 1998 study out of Israel failed to show any significant benefits of anthocyanosides where military night vision was concerned. Further studies are necessary to confirm or deny the theoretical efficacy of dark berries for night vision, although it seems that, to date, black currant may be the berry of choice for night vision as evidenced by the Japanese study. Anthocyanosides are found in many dark blue, dark purple, or black coloured berries such as bilberries, black currant berries, and blueberries.
