Description
Oats, despite Dr. Johnson's dismissal as "a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people", are one of the world's most important cereal crops, used as a staple food in northern Europe for centuries. Oats are sweet, nutritious and warming - ideal to combat a cold, damp, northern climate. They are rich in iron, zinc and manganese, so oats also a good source of many vital minerals.
The oat plant is anti-depressant, a restorative nerve tonic and regarded as emotionally uplifting, so a bowl of porridge made from good-quality oatmeal is the ideal way to start the day. Extracts of the whole oatstraw plant are generally used medicinally: the tincture is often combined with vervain for nervous problems, exhaustion and depression, emotional upsets associated with menopause, or debility following illness.
The juice of fresh oats, pressed when still green, is similarly used as a nerve tonic. Oatstraw baths are used in folk medicine to counter rheumatic pains.
As a home remedy, oatmeal is excellent in skin washes for eczema and dry skin - simply add a tablespoon to a bowl of warm water and use for washing. Gerard certainly considered it as a beauty aid at a time when white skin was highly regarded: `Oatmeale is good for to make a faire and well coloured maide," he wrote, "to looke like a cake of tallow."
Recent research suggests that oatbran (and to a lesser extent oatmeal) can also help to reduce blood cholesterol levels, so oat should certainly be regularly included in the diet of those at risk from heart disease or atherosclerosis.
