Description
Frankincense Tree Boswellia sacra Flueckiger (= B. carteri Birdw.).
Other Names: Arbre-à-encens (French); Weihrauchbaum (German); incenso (Italian); incienso (Spanish).
Description: Frankincense is a small, much-branched tree with thick stems and a smooth, papery bark. Compound leaves, each with about 11 dentate leaflets, are clustered towards the branch ends. The small, pale yellow, star-shaped flowers are borne in slender clusters. Other sources of incense or olibanum, produced mainly in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, include B. frereana, B. papyrifera and B. neglecta.
Origin: Northeastern Africa and southern Arabia.
Parts Used: Resin (Olibanum). Tapped resin is inferior to that which flows spontaneously from the bark.
Uses and Properties: The aromatic resin, known as frankincense or olibanum, has been used since ancient times for religious and medicinal purposes. It stimulates circulation and is antiseptic, analgesic, expectorant and sedative. It is applied as plasters to treat rheumatic conditions and is sometimes taken internally for respiratory and urinary ailments. Volatile oil distilled from the resin is used in aromatherapy against anxiety and tension.
Active Ingredients: Frankincense contains 5 - 9% volatile oil (alpha-pinene, phellandrene, 1-octylacetate, and various other monoterpenes and diterpenes), together with about 60% resinous material (mainly pentacyclic triterpenoids, such as boswellic acids and their acetates). It also contains other triterpenes and mucilage.
Pharmacological Effects: Beneficial effects in the treatment of arthritis are thought to be due to the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, thus preventing the formation of leucotrienes. The essential oil has decongestant and antibiotic properties. Several clinical studies have been done on boswellin (an oleoresin from Boswellia serrata - Indian franlcincense) in the treatment of arthritis. Boswellic acids have definite anti-inflammatory properties in animals but the results of human studies have not yet been conclusive.
Notes: Frankincense has a bitter taste and is practically odourless. The characteristic smell is released only when the granules of resin are placed on glowing coals. Frankincense (gum olibanum) should not be confused with myrrh, scented myrrh or gum opopanax derived from Commiphora species.
Status; Traditional medicine.
Preparation and Dosage: The resin is usually applied topically or is included in inhalants.

Was taking a joint compound for pain and the formula was changed, removing the boswellin from the product. Went looking for a replacement and found Boswellin 70% Extract which did just what I needed. Removed the pain! And I discontinued the other product.
Tried another Boswellin product which didn't work. This one is the best! It worked for me.
